Politicians and judges love to sell the registry as some high-tech, scientific masterpiece: “Don’t worry — it’s all based on careful risk assessments that put the right people in the right tiers.” Sounds smart, responsible, and reassuring. It’s also one of the biggest lies in the entire scam. The registry isn’t based on risk assessments at all. It’s a lazy, conviction-only rubber stamp that looks at one thing and one thing only: the original crime you were convicted of. Nothing else matters.

No psychological evaluation. No look at your actual behavior since the offense. No consideration of how many years have passed, whether you’ve completed treatment, or how low your real risk has become. A 17-year-old who had consensual sex with a 15-year-old gets the same tier as a 40-year-old serial predator in most states. A one-time non-contact offense gets lumped in with violent rape. The tiers are automatic, mechanical, and based purely on the statute you were convicted under. That’s it. No individualized assessment whatsoever.

This isn’t science. It’s a bureaucratic shortcut that lets the system look “tough” while ignoring mountains of actual risk data from the Department of Justice and researchers. The feds blackmailed the states into this SORNA mess with funding threats. Judges then waved their magical “public interest” wand and called it a harmless “civil regulatory scheme.” Meanwhile the registry keeps branding low-risk people for life and pretending it’s all based on careful evaluation. It isn’t. It’s a one-size-fits-all stamp that destroys lives regardless of real danger.

The rubber stamp keeps the list big, the panic high, and the control machine running smoothly. Real risk assessment would shrink the registry dramatically and expose how pointless and overbroad it really is. Can’t have that.

This is Myth #9 of The Registry Joke — the lie that pretends the system is smart when it’s actually just cruel and stupid.
