Politicians and media talking heads love to paint every registrant as a lone monster lurking in the shadows with no connections to normal society. “Sex offenders don’t have families or children of their own,” they imply. It makes the registry easier to sell — just punish the bad guys and everyone else is fine. This is one of the cruelest and most dishonest myths of all.

The truth is the vast majority of registrants have families — spouses, young children, parents, and siblings who suffer tremendously through no fault of their own. When a person is put on the public registry, the entire family gets punished by proxy. Their address is broadcast online. Neighbors harass the whole household. Kids get bullied and ostracized at school because “your dad/mom is a sex offender.” Families get evicted when landlords discover the registry listing. Spouses lose jobs when their connection to a registrant becomes known. The public shame spills over onto innocent children and partners who did nothing wrong.

The collateral damage is devastating and often ignored. Documented cases show families facing death threats, property destruction, and relentless online harassment. In one heartbreaking case, a mother killed herself after her child faced nonstop public torment due to the registry. These are real people with real families being destroyed by a system that pretends only the registrant pays the price.

This myth allows judges to keep waving their “public interest” magic wand and calling the registry a harmless “civil regulatory scheme.” It allows the feds to continue blackmailing states into SORNA compliance. And it allows the public to feel righteous while entire families are collateral damage in the Registry Joke.

The registry doesn’t just ruin the lives of those on the list — it ruins the lives of everyone who loves them too.
