Politicians and judges love to beat this drum the loudest: “Registrants can’t be reformed — they’re irredeemable monsters who will always be a danger to society.” It’s the ultimate fear-mongering line that justifies lifetime public shaming, endless felony compliance traps, and total social exile long after someone has paid for their crime. The “Irredeemable Monster” propaganda sounds tough and protective, but it’s pure bullshit contradicted by decades of actual research.

The data is crystal clear. Most people who commit a sexual offense do not reoffend. Sexual recidivism rates drop sharply as people age — often plummeting after 40 and becoming extremely low after 50. Desistance research (the study of why and how people stop committing crimes) shows the overwhelming majority of offenders naturally age out of criminal behavior and can go on to live productive, law-abiding lives. Many registrants have already gone 10, 20, or even 30+ years with zero new offenses. Yet the registry refuses to recognize any of it. Once labeled, you’re permanently branded as a monster with no meaningful path to prove you’ve changed.

This lie is pure political convenience. It lets judges wave their magical “public interest” wand and pretend the registry is just a harmless “civil regulatory scheme.” It lets the feds keep blackmailing states into SORNA with funding threats. And it keeps the public terrified enough to support a system that destroys housing, jobs, families, and lives for no safety gain. Science says people can and do reform. The registry just refuses to let them.

The “irredeemable monster” narrative isn’t based on facts — it’s based on fear and control.
